Dubai Taxi Company Accelerates Green Transition with 200 Electric Vehicles from BYD

Dubai’s streets are set to become greener as Chinese automaker BYD, a leading rival to Tesla, secures a major deal to supply 200 electric vehicles (EVs) to the Dubai Taxi Company (DTC). The agreement, announced this week, marks a significant step in the emirate’s push to electrify its public transport network and reduce carbon emissions.

The order includes BYD’s flagship models, such as the BYD Tang SUV and Han sedan, both praised for their long-range capabilities and fast-charging technology. DTC officials highlighted the partnership as a cornerstone of their strategy to convert 50% of the city’s taxi fleet to eco-friendly vehicles by 2030. “This collaboration aligns with Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy and underscores our commitment to sustainable mobility,” said a DTC spokesperson.

Dubai’s EV ambitions are rapidly gaining momentum. Earlier this year, the Dubai Taxi Company announced plans to introduce 250 electric taxis as part of a broader initiative to position the city as a global leader in smart urban transport. While BYD’s new order represents a bulk of this effort, Tesla has also made inroads into the market. Tesla vehicles already in use with Arabia Taxi, another Dubai-based operator, have showcased the city’s appetite for luxury EVs. Additionally, the iconic Tesla Model 3 has become a common sight in high-traffic areas, blending sustainability with premium service.

The rivalry between BYD and Tesla in Dubai reflects a global battle for EV dominance. BYD, which outsold Tesla worldwide in Q4 2023, has prioritized affordability without compromising performance—a key factor in DTC’s decision. “BYD’s technology offers the reliability and cost-efficiency critical for large-scale fleet operations,” the DTC spokesperson added. According to industry reports, the 200-vehicle deployment will begin in early 2025, supported by expanded charging infrastructure across the city.

As Dubai races toward its 2050 net-zero target, partnerships with automakers like BYD and Tesla highlight the growing synergy between public transport goals and private-sector innovation. For residents and visitors, the shift promises quieter, cleaner rides—and a front-row seat to the future of urban mobility.
