According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple has officially begun development on its next operating system, which is scheduled to launch in 2025.
The report said that the company has adopted code names for its upcoming operating systems, calling iOS 19 “Luck,” macOS 16 “Cheer,” and watchOS 12 “Nepali.” Apple uses internal codenames to refer to unreleased hardware and software.
Google updates its systems every year with names inspired by the famous candy. The series ended in 2019 when the company dropped the names and said it wanted to become more inclusive and global.
Apple relies on a naming system that it announces to the public based on the numbers of the different operating systems it releases. However, at the same time, before these became reference standards, Apple also named the operating system for its Mac computers after the big hardware: macOS Cat. This year's macOS 15 is called Sequoia, a national park in central California.
Bloomberg hasn't revealed what features will be available in future Apple updates, but it's likely that these will also depend on expanded AI capabilities.
It is worth noting that Apple recently announced new operating systems for its devices, such as iOS 19, macOS Sequoia 15, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2, which are still in the testing phase and are expected to be launched in the fall.
