At its annual developer conference HDC 2024, Huawei unveiled updates to its HarmonyOS Next operating system and the large-scale AI language model Pangu.
The Chinese company continues to reduce its reliance on foreign technology and challenge major AI companies including Google, Nvidia and OpenAI.
Huawei has made it a priority to develop an operating system to replace the Android system produced by Google, since the United States placed Huawei on a trade blacklist and restricted its access to American technology.
Meanwhile, in the AI space, China is developing its own version of OpenAI's generative AI technology and hardware solutions to rival Nvidia.
Huawei uses the new HarmonyOS Next system in all its products, including smartphones, computers, tablets, cars, wearables and enterprises.
The company says its operating system has been installed on more than 900 million devices since its launch a decade ago.
“We took this opportunity to develop a secure, self-managing operating system that outperforms other companies,” Yu Chengdong, president of Huawei's consumer business, said at the company's developer conference. “In just over a decade, we have reached an important milestone. It took some Western countries forty years to do this.
Meanwhile, the Pangu 5.0 large AI language model is available in four different sizes: a small size that can be integrated into smartphones, a medium size with up to 90 billion parameters, an extra-large size with up to 230 billion parameters, and an extra-large size With up to 230 billion parameters, and a very large size that can be integrated into smartphones. big. According to Huawei, it has billions of settings.
Huawei also showcased humanoid robots and smart manufacturing solutions, similar to what Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang previously presented at Computex in Taipei.
Huawei has launched Harmony OS Next and claims that it can be seamlessly adopted across all its devices.
"Harmony OS Next is different from other operating systems in that each type of device requires a specific operating system, while Harmony OS Next is an all-in-one system," Yu said, adding that new flagship smartphones will be released later this year. will come to market. The Mate 70 uses a new operating system.
Huawei also launched the Harmony Intelligence infrastructure to integrate AI capabilities into its devices, including the AI voice assistant Celia.
Yu said Harmony OS already has 900 million users and more than 1,500 out of 5,000 Android apps have been ported to Harmony OS.
The executive explained that Huawei continues to expand its AI foundations, including Ascend chips for AI accelerators, Kunpeng server processors, Kirin chips for hardware processors, and language model computing power.
