Apple is close to striking a deal with OpenAI to use the startup's technology on iPhones, as part of a broader push to bring the benefits of artificial intelligence to its devices, according to a new report from Bloomberg.
The two parties are finalizing the terms of the agreement to use the ChatGPT feature in the upcoming iPhone operating system, iOS 18.
Apple is also in discussions with Google about licensing the Gemini chatbot, and while those discussions are still ongoing, an agreement has not yet been reached.
The OpenAI protocol will allow Apple to deploy the popular chatbot as part of a suite of new AI features scheduled for release next month.
Bloomberg reported in April that talks with OpenAI had intensified, but there was no guarantee the deal would be announced soon.
Apple is planning to hold its annual worldwide developers conference in June to make an impact in the field of artificial intelligence.
As part of this effort, the company plans to run some upcoming AI features through data centers equipped with internal processors, Bloomberg reported.
Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said he personally used OpenAI's ChatGPT, but added that there were many issues that needed to be resolved.
Cook promised to carefully integrate new AI features into Apple products.
During Apple's earnings call last week, he said the company has an advantage in artificial intelligence.
“We believe in the transformative power and promise of artificial intelligence, and we believe we have the advantages that will set us apart in this new era, including Apple's unique combination of seamless integration between hardware, software and services,” Cook said.
