Tesla offers ride-sharing functionality for robotaxis

Tesla previewed an upcoming ride-sharing feature in its app before introducing a robotaxi in August.

The company released a mockup of the upcoming feature, demonstrating the ability to schedule trips through the company's app.

The first screen displays a large button that says “Call Back” and a message about possible wait times.

The second screen contains a 3D map with a small virtual vehicle driving along the road towards waiting passengers.

While waiting, passengers can adjust the interior temperature to their desired temperature, taking into account other details such as waiting time and maximum number of passengers in the vehicle.

Once the car arrives, the app displays directions to your destination as well as additional controls for selecting music.

The automated nature of the self-driving vehicle has not been determined.

The company did not provide any further details about how it will work, although images show an Uber-like feature that can remotely adjust a car's temperature before it arrives.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced earlier this month that the company plans to launch a long-awaited robotaxi on August 8th.

Tesla has promised autonomous ride-sharing for years, and Musk has promised that the company's robotaxis will start transporting passengers in 2019.

It is unclear when the company will launch such a service. “We are currently developing a ride-sharing feature that will be offered in the future,” Tesla said. “We believe the Tesla software experience is the best of all our products, and we plan to seamlessly integrate ridesharing into our app.”

Meanwhile, the company said in its first-quarter 2024 financial report that its revenues fell 9% year-on-year, its biggest loss in more than a decade.

In announcing the results, Musk said the ride-sharing service, called Cyber Cab, will operate as a combination of Uber and Airbnb, allowing Tesla owners to choose whether their cars will be part of the service.

“Tesla will have multiple cars and will operate in a fleet,” Musk said. The user will have a pool of cars and the user can add or remove his car from the fleet at any time.

"Tesla owners can decide whether they only allow friends and family to use the car, whether they only allow premium users, or whether they allow everyone," he added.
