Dell first introduced a memory standard called CAMM2 in 2022 before JEDEC approved it in late 2023 as a replacement for SO-DIMM. The company said it developed the standard in cooperation with Micron. Today, Lenovo is the first company to launch laptops with a new memory standard called CAMM 2.
DDR5 CAMM2 modules are designed for high-performance mainstream laptops and desktops, while LPDDR5/5X CAMM2 modules target the broader laptop and server segments.
The 7th generation ThinkPad P1 laptop is equipped with 64GB of CAMM2 LPDDR5x memory, which consumes 61% less power than before compared to DDR5 SO-DIMM.
According to Lenovo, CAMM2 memory is 64% smaller than SO-DIMM memory. It also has a higher bandwidth than SO-DIMM.
Although Dell previously offered 128GB CAMM2 memory, offering 64GB CAMM2 memory is also a good thing.
The ThinkPad P1 notebook seems to be able to handle AI effectively as it has an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H processor and an NVIDIA Ada Lovelace graphics processor.
The computer is also equipped with a storage drive called M.2 NVME SSD with a capacity of 8 TB and also supports Wi-Fi 7 wireless connectivity, an HDMI 2.1 port, and many other ports. It is scheduled to be available early next month for $2,619.
