Meta enables end-to-end encryption in Messenger by default

Meta announced that its Messenger messaging platform will offer end-to-end encryption by default.

The company said that all messages in conversations and calls between users are encrypted and no third party can view them or access their contents.

Meta (then Facebook) made end-to-end encryption available as an optional feature in the Messenger app years before it became standard.

“Our engineers, coders, designers, policy experts, and product managers have worked tirelessly to build Messenger functionality from the ground up,” said Loredana Crisan, head of the Messenger platform.

According to the company, end-to-end encryption will not affect other features available on Messenger. However, according to the company's statement, it may take some time before all Messenger conversations are converted to encryption by default.

It's worth noting that group conversations in Messenger can still be encrypted, and Instagram messages are not encrypted by default. However, WhatsApp, which also belongs to Meta, already provides end-to-end encryption for all content. Different aspects over the years.

Meta recently announced that it will separate Messenger chats from Instagram, as well as end SMS support on Android and discontinue the Messenger Lite app that millions of users rely on.
