Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads has begun testing the ability to tag posts to sort them by interest or topic.
Users can use the “#” symbol to take advantage of the hashtag feature. Although the platform does not display the “#” symbol when displaying hashtags, the hashtags appear as clickable blue hyperlinks.
If you type "#" in the post text field, cards containing tagged topics or other similar topics will appear, while topics with multiple posts will appear at the bottom.
Testing will begin in Australia first and the Threads team will then iterate the trial based on user feedback. Other countries will soon be able to test the hashtag, Zuckerberg wrote in the announcement.
Topics, unlike Platform X, only allow one hashtag per post, a decision the company may have made to minimize issues.
People often add various trending and unusual hashtags to their posts to increase the chances of the post appearing in searches.
Adding multiple tags to posts has become a bit annoying; It seemed like he was looking for attention.
This limitation can sometimes be a hindrance; Users may want to search for posts that are not limited to a specific tag, or combine tags to narrow down discussion topics, although in its current form the tag feature in topics only requires them to select one tag.
This feature came relatively early in the development process and there has been a lot of discussion about whether hashtags have a place in the future of social media; Some considered it a relic of antiquity.
In 2007, technologist Chris Messina came up with the idea of using hashtags to collect trending topics, events, and topics. Twitter adopted this feature and other social media platforms followed suit.
Meta with Threads helps rethink current social norms and experiment with how to improve them to meet the needs of modern web users.
