Snapchat has released to developers a beta of Lens Studio 5.0, an augmented reality development tool designed to support advanced augmented reality development while increasing productivity and adding new AI features, including those based on OpenAI technology.
Snapchat has partnered with OpenAI to provide a new ChatGPT remote API that allows developers to use ChatGPT in Lenses.
Developers can create text content to create new creative, educational, and conversational experiences for Snapchat users.
According to the company, developers can create lenses containing random objects generated through testing and ChatGPT, as well as create new lens types that change the look of the camera by automatically applying filters and director mode based on user prompts.
It's worth noting that this isn't the first time Snapchat has leveraged OpenAI, as its My AI chatbot is based on OpenAI's GPT technology.
Another new AI feature in the Lens Studio 5.0 beta is a 3D mask generator that allows anyone to create their first selfie lens in seconds, the company said.
3D Face Mask Generator combines generative AI with Snapchat's face grid feature.
Lens Studio 5.0 beta improves productivity with projects loading up to 18 times faster than previous versions.
The company points out that increased productivity allows developers to create complex augmented reality projects.
The beta version of Lens Studio 5.0 supports version control tools such as Git, which means multiple developers can work on projects at the same time.
Last year, the company launched Lenses with Digital Products, allowing developers to offer exclusive augmented reality features in Lens that app users can pay to unlock. Digital products are now available to every developer.
Snapchat indicated that there is a new section in Lens Explorer to promote Lenses through digital products to make it easier for Snapchat users to find and try them.
The company said there are currently 330,000 developers relying on its augmented reality platform, and they created about 3.5 million Lenses that were viewed by more than 3 trillion Snapchat users last year.
