Samsung announced earlier this year that it was trialling mixed reality in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, with testing including mixed reality headsets similar to Apple's Vision Pro mixed reality glasses.
The glasses are still a long way from an actual market launch. Rumor has it that the headwear may be available in limited quantities by the end of 2024.
It seems that the mixed reality headset is not the only wearable device that the Korean company is developing; Samsung is also developing smart glasses such as Meta Smart Glass and Google Glass.
Samsung has applied for a trademark for the term “Samsung Glasses.” On 21 August 2023, the Company filed an application for a trademark with the UK Intellectual Property Office. On November 10, 2023, the Intellectual Property Office approved the trademark.
During the application process, companies must specify the product categories they want to cover, and Samsung mentioned augmented reality glasses, headsets, smartphones, smart glasses and virtual reality glasses in the filing.
This is a broad category of devices, and the devices associated with the brand seem to be augmented reality glasses, smart glasses, and virtual reality glasses.
Samsung is reportedly developing a mixed reality headset equipped with a Qualcomm processor and an operating system based on Google Android.
The company developed its original design but abandoned it after considering Apple's Vision Pro and began working on an advanced device that could cost around $2,000, compared to $3,499 for Apple's Vision Pro.
Qualcomm previously confirmed that it is developing an advanced XR chip that is more powerful than the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip used in the Meta Quest 3 mixed reality glasses.
Upcoming Samsung devices could also use high refresh rate MicroOLED displays from eMagin, a company previously acquired by Samsung Display.
