Alibaba launches an artificial intelligence model to challenge Microsoft and Amazon

Alibaba has unveiled a modern version of its artificial intelligence model, as the Chinese technology giant seeks to compete with its American technology rivals such as Amazon and Microsoft.

The Chinese cloud computing and e-commerce giant has announced the launch of its most advanced language model, Unified Qianwen 2.0, to help its customers realize the benefits of generative AI.

Large language models trained on large amounts of data form the basis of generative AI applications such as ChatGPT, developed by the American company OpenAI.

Alibaba describes its large-scale Qianwen 2.0 unified language model as a significant upgrade over its predecessor, which was launched in April.

“Unified Qianwen 2.0 has demonstrated exceptional capabilities in understanding complex instructions, writing scripts, reasoning, memory, and preventing hallucinations,” Alibaba said in a press release. » Hallucinations occur when artificial intelligence provides false information.

The company also announced a series of initiatives spanning the entire generative AI technology stack, from modular infrastructures and training platforms to industry-specific AI models.

“Large-scale language models have huge potential to transform the industry,” said Zhou Jingren, CTO of Alibaba Cloud. “We are committed to leveraging cutting-edge technologies to help our customers capitalize on continued growth momentum.”

For businesses, Alibaba has released a series of AI models for specific industries, such as customer support, legal services, healthcare, finance, document management, audio and video management, code development, etc.

The company also announced its Geneative AI as a Service platform, which allows companies to build their own generative AI applications using their own data.

Third-party access to data is one of the companies' concerns with general AI products like ChatGPT.

Alibaba and other major cloud computing companies provide tools that allow companies to use their own data to build their own generative AI products, which providers protect as part of a suite of services.

Alibaba is China's largest cloud company by market share, although it is trying to catch up with Amazon and Microsoft abroad.

According to a report by investment bank Goldman Sachs, generative AI could increase global GDP by 7% and increase productivity by 1.5 percentage points within a decade.
