Shin Cheol Baek, technical program manager for Samsung's mobile experience security team, said the company has been trying hard to provide security updates for its devices for more than five years.
Baker said that Samsung plans to provide long-term security update support for its devices, in line with its vision and taking into account the upcoming new regulations.
The remarks were made during a media interview at the recent Samsung Developer Conference 2023 in San Francisco, California.
Samsung provides updates for a large number of devices, more than 1 billion devices every month and 10 billion devices every year.
Samsung currently offers more than 150 different devices on the market, for which the company issues security updates on a monthly, quarterly or semi-annual basis.
Baker said the company invests "significant resources in releasing updates this way."
Samsung offers four years of annual operating system updates and five years of security updates for its new devices.
The statement by the South Korean company officials was limited to extending the deadlines for security updates and did not mention extending the annual updates to the Android system or the Samsung One UI interface.
Google's recent announcement of its commitment to providing all updates to the new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones for seven years may encourage other companies to follow suit or at least improve their policies. They have been updated to make their devices more durable than they currently are.
