It appears that prices for most hardware components will rise due to the economic slowdown in late 2023, with DDR5 and DDR4 memory expected to follow in the fourth quarter of this year.
According to the latest report from Technavio Research Group, the consumer DRAM market is expected to see price increases of up to 8%.
Additionally, RAM prices will also rise by up to 8%, leading to slight price increases for graphics cards and gaming laptops in early 2024.
The report highlights that the main reason for the increase in DDR5 and DDR4 memory prices is Samsung's recent decline in DRAM production.
Therefore, manufacturers plan to increase contract prices for consumer DRAM to avoid financial losses, with prices increasing by only a modest 3% to 8%; This is due to continued low demand, which is unexpected.
The OEM DRAM market has followed the same path, with DDR5 memory prices expected to rise by 3-8% and DDR4 memory prices expected to rise by up to 5%. One factor driving the increase in DDR5 memory prices is the new line of processors coming to market this year, such as Intel Raptor Lake Refresh processors and AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 processors.
Due to consumer demand for graphics cards, the price increase will also include RAM such as GDDR6 and GDDR6X despite their higher prices, which has led to increased demand for 16GB GDDR6 memory chips. Prices for this type of memory will continue to rise in 2024.
The report highlights that the price of DDR4 and DDR5 memory has not increased in the server DRAM market.
The biggest problem for DDR5 server memory is that its adoption rate is lower than expected, and it was also found that only 15% of the total DDR5 server memory inventory was used in the third quarter of this year, which is a very low number. percent.
These numbers confirm that in the next stage, in addition to DDR5 and DDR4 memory, the prices of discrete graphics cards and gaming laptops will also rise.
