Intel is touting the next big Windows update in 2024

Intel has announced that it will release the next major Windows update in 2024, which it hopes will boost sales. David Zinsner, Intel's chief financial officer, discussed next year's Windows updates at Citigroup's global technology conference last month, noting that consumers may need to upgrade their computers due to new versions of Windows.

“We think 2024 could be a very good year for customers, especially with Windows updates,” Zinsner said on a Sept. 6 call with Citi analysts. “We still believe the installed base is very old and needs to be updated, and given the drivers of Windows, we believe next year could be the start of updates.”

Zinsner's comments come months after a series of internal Intel documents related to Windows 12 were leaked.

It is news that Intel is preparing the Meteor Lake platform for the next generation of Microsoft's operating system, which is expected to be called Windows 12.

Intel announced its Meteor Lake mobile chipset, which will be available in December with built-in AI coprocessors.

Meteor Lake is Intel's first processor to have different chips for each component and the first to be manufactured using the 4nm manufacturing process.

Adding an AI coprocessor could be important as Microsoft adds AI capabilities to its operating system.

Microsoft has not yet announced any plans for its Windows 12 operating system, although there are indications that the company wants to incorporate artificial intelligence features into future versions of its operating system.

“As we begin to develop future versions of Windows, we will look at other areas where AI should play a natural role in the experience,” Youssef Mahdi, Microsoft's head of consumer marketing, said earlier this year.

Microsoft previously integrated the Copilot AI Assistant directly into Windows 11, focusing on AI during its Surface event.

Microsoft has also added a special NPU chip to Surface Laptop Studio 2 that enhances Windows Studio effects features like direct eye contact and background noise cancellation.

Microsoft is working on a hardware update focused on AI coprocessors, paving the way for more focus on AI in the next operating system.
