Adam Mosseri, CEO of photo and short video sharing platform Instagram, said the platform is not currently developing a dedicated app for iPad.
Mosseri stated again that launching the iPad application was not his priority, saying only that “it would be a good thing in the future,” as he mentioned in his official report.
Mosseri said early last year that the number of Instagram users on iPad was not enough for the development team to prioritize developing a dedicated iPad app, indicating that attention was focused on other important things.
Compared to the iPhone, Instagram's user base is relatively small. For example, Apple sold about 42 million iPhones in the second quarter of 2023, compared to about 10 million iPads, so some developers were content to develop only iPhone versions of their applications.
Meta Corporation, which owns Instagram, does not lack the resources to develop custom apps for iPad, and some believe that the main reason for the lack of Instagram apps on iPad is the iPad's unique camera capabilities. Compare iPhone and iPad.
Notably, Meta is yet to offer customized versions of the WhatsApp and Threads apps for iPad.
According to recent reports, Meta is testing a version of WhatsApp on iPad.
