The code within the X application revealed that support is coming for voice and video calls, however, the feature will not be available to all platform users.Rather, it appears to be limited to those with paid memberships.
This comes after CEO Linda Yaccarino confirmed last month that the app, formerly known as Twitter, would offer voice and video calling capabilities as part of its transformation into a global app.
Chris Messina, a veteran technology expert turned investor, made a discovery in the X app code.
The feature currently allows X users to choose to receive audio and video calls from other verified users, people they follow, or people in their address book, depending on what they want.
The feature description says: “Take messaging to the next level with voice and video calling. Activate the feature and choose the person you want to use it with, focusing on the subscription type.
Other lines of code reference warnings that appear when someone tries to send a direct message to another user through the app. The disclaimer states that voice and video calling is a paid feature and requires you to register to access it.
This means users must pay for X Premium, the subscription formerly known as Twitter Blue.Which includes a number of updated features, including verification, reduced ad serving, the ability to edit posts, support for long posts, prioritized categories in search and conversations, and more.
The platform has not yet been able to provide convincing arguments. Elon Musk previously said that the app has 550 million monthly active users.
For comparison, Snapchat's premium subscription, Snapchat+, has more than 5 million users. Meanwhile, analysts expect the number of paid Meta Verified subscribers to reach around 12 million by early next year.
