Traffic to ChatGPT declines for the third month in a row

Last August, the website traffic of OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot dropped for the third month in a row.

Analysis firm Slikeweb said in a blog post that there are signs that the downtrend is coming to an end.

Global visits to ChatGPT decreased by 3.2% to 1.43 billion visits to computers and mobile phones in August 2023, after falling by about 10% in each of the previous two months.

The amount of time visitors spend on the site per month has also decreased since March, from an average of 8.7 minutes to 7 minutes in August.

But the number of unique visitors worldwide increased from 180 million to 180.5 million in August.

Schools are expected to reopen in many countries around the world in September, which could help increase ChatGPT traffic and usage, especially since some schools have already started accepting ChatGPT.

ChatGPT traffic in the US increased slightly in August, coinciding with the opening of local schools.

“Students asking for help with their homework seem to be part of the story,” said David F. Carr of Sametimeweb, who regularly monitors ChatGPT and its competitors. The generative AI-powered chatbot launched last November and has caused a stir in using the technology for everyday tasks, from editing to programming, reaching 100 million monthly active users in January, two months after its launch.

Generative AI techniques use past data to create new content for writing an essay or poem.

Prior to Threads' Meta launch, ChatGPT was the fastest growing consumer application of all time, and is now one of the top 30 websites in the world.

Among ChatGPT's competitors, which launched earlier this year, include: Google's Bard. Microsoft Bing offers a chatbot that uses the same global language model as ChatGPT.

OpenAI also released ChatGPT for iOS last May and then for Android last July.

While ChatGPT is free for users, OpenAI offers a paid version with special features for $20 per month.

In addition to ChatGPT, OpenAI makes money by selling access to its AI models directly to developers and companies, and through a partnership with Microsoft, which has invested more than $10 billion in the company.
