Acer SH242Y Ebmihx 23.8-inch Full HD 1920 x 1080 Ultra-Slim Home Office Monitor | AMD FreeSync | AMD FreeSync 1ms VRB | 100 Hz | zero frames | Height-adjustable stand with swivel and tilt function (HDMI 1.4 and VGA ports)
In competitive gaming, every frame matters. Introducing the Acer SH242Y Gaming Monitor - a Full HD monitor that can keep up with your games. With AMD FreeSync technology, your game's frame rate is determined by your graphics card rather than the fixed refresh rate of your monitor, giving you a massive competitive advantage. Additionally, users can enjoy a comfortable visual experience with a low dimming and flicker-free screen while gaming. The design saves desk space and allows multiple monitors to be placed side by side to create a large, seamless display. (UM.QS2AA.E05)
If you need to update FreeSync/Variable, you must pass it. Nvidia and Intel GPUs do not run FreeSync over HDMI 1.4, which means that only some AMD GPUs support this configuration due to the lack of DisplayPort. I tried connecting the monitor via HDMI to a Ryzen 3 Mini PC with an integrated Vega GPU, and although the system supports FreeSync over DisplayPort, I couldn't get it to work. Yes, I used the HDMI cable that came with the monitor. If you really want FreeSync, I highly recommend looking elsewhere. If you already have an AMD GPU you want to use with this monitor, the specs list ranges between 48Hz and 100Hz.
How does the screen work? For value watchers, this is great. I found the image quality and viewing angles to be very good. At 1920 x 1080 (maximum resolution), the maximum refresh rate is 100Hz, which is unexpected but welcome. This helps make up for the lack of proper VRR support, as you can run the game at 100fps on PC, which helps reduce input lag even if you have to use default sync.
With a brightness of only 250 nits, it's not a bright display, so plan to use it in a dark room. The monitor has built-in speakers that allow playback of audio data transmitted via HDMI. If you use a VGA port, you can also connect a 3.5mm audio source. Sound quality is... well, mediocre, as you'd expect. But hey, at least there is some.
The monitor has a practical stand that can be lifted and tilted. It works fine and I was surprised to see this on the values monitor. However, there is a small problem with the alternative installation option. There are only two holes on the back to connect it to a VESA arm or other mount. There should be four, as you see on a typical VESA mounting plate, but that's not the case. 2 only 75mm. Fortunately the screen is bright, I tried attaching it to the arm with two screws and it seemed sturdy. But I prefer to leave it alone because in my opinion two screws are not enough to hold everything together.
An HDMI cable and 3.5mm audio cable are included.
The monitor is powered by the included 12V 2.5A power supply. Some people may not like this, and I understand that because I hate wall warts myself. The good thing about it is that you won't have to throw away the entire screen in case of a power outage. All you have to do is replace the power adapter with another 12V power adapter.
In the end, this monitor has a good image and great value for money (which is why I gave it 5 stars), but don't buy this monitor because of the almost non-existent FreeSync functionality. However, the 100Hz refresh rate is perfect for gaming and almost makes up for the FreeSync issues. But let's be honest: would you play serious games on this screen? No, so it doesn't matter.
