Sony has decided to increase the annual prices of all three bundles of its PlayStation Plus service until September 6, two months after Microsoft announced plans to increase the price of its Game Pass subscription.
Basic subscriptions range from $60 to $80 per year, additional plans cost between $35 to $135 more per year, and premium plans cost between $40 to $160 more per year.
The price change does not apply to existing PlayStation Plus users on the annual plan until the next renewal date, November 6 or later.
If you make changes to your plan (such as a tier change) before September 6, you will be subject to the new rate.
Sony hasn't announced any changes to monthly subscriptions ($10 basic, $15 add-on, $18 premium) or quarterly subscriptions ($25 basic, $40 add-on, $50 premium) yet.
The company points out that annual plans remain cheaper in the long term than monthly or quarterly subscriptions. Users still have a few days to renew their current PlayStation Plus plan for another year, two or three years at current prices.
The company said it is expanding the PlayStation Plus program globally to continue offering high-quality games and value-added features on its PlayStation Plus subscription service.
Last year, Sony launched PlayStation Plus in response to Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass, which allows users to play select games each month.
While the company announced the price increase, it also stated that the games will launch in September. PlayStation Plus includes Saints Row, Black Desert Traveler Edition, and Generation Zero.
Although deals vary, it's worth noting that PlayStation Plus is generally cheaper than its Xbox Game Pass equivalent.
The basic PlayStation Plus annual plan is $52 cheaper than the equivalent Xbox Game Pass plan, while the premium PlayStation Plus annual plan is $44 cheaper than the equivalent Xbox Game Pass Ultimate plan.
However, Microsoft has been providing access to all of its games via Xbox Game Pass since launch, which Sony can't compete with.
