Why are some Android phones not receiving system updates?

Some Android phones get new features as soon as they come out, some don't, and every time a new feature is announced, the first question that comes to mind is: Will my phone have this feature?

There is a lot to do when it comes to how to update your Android phone and when updates will be available on different devices. We explain this below in addition to updating the system on your phone:

First, what do Android updates depend on?

Android is an open source system and any company that makes a smartphone or tablet can add Android. These devices can run on different versions of Android, and companies that make phones like Samsung, OnePlus, and even Google use the base version of the system to create their user interfaces. Example: Current Samsung phones are running Android 13 based on One UI 5.1 from Samsung.

The basic version of Android is called the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). When Google adds updates to AOSP, phone companies use it, customize it, and push it to their devices. Google's updated phones are only Pixel phones, and Google is responsible for updating other companies' phones.

second; What version of Android is your phone using?

You can check the Android version on your phone by following these steps:

  1. Go to Settings and select About Phone.
  2. Scroll down until you get to the Android version option. Your device's version number is displayed under the words (Android version). If the number is 13, then your phone is running Android 13.
  3. On some devices, for example Samsung Galaxy phones, you need to go to (Software Information) and there you will see an option for Android version and One UI version.

third; What is the latest version of Android?

Currently, Android 13 is the latest Android version, which will be released on August 15, 2022. Android 14 is expected to be released to users in the fall of 2023.

fourth; Which Android phones have the longest update support time?

The Android phones with the best support period for system updates are the Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones. So, if you want to get the latest system updates in the long term, the most important thing is to choose a phone from a company that supports long term updates for its devices.

Galaxy phones released in 2019 or later will receive four years of security updates, while newer devices will receive up to five years of security updates.

On the other hand, Google starts with the Pixel 6 series and receives three years of Android updates and five years of security updates on its devices. Pixel 5a and earlier will receive system and security updates for three years, which means Pixel 3 and earlier models will no longer be supported.

Fifth ; Android system update method:

Android phone updates largely depend on what kind of phone you have and whether or not an update is available. An update is occasionally available, but it may take some time for it to appear. However, the process for checking for available updates is very similar on Android phones and looks like this:

  1. Go to Settings and select System.
  2. Click (System Update) to update the system.
  3. Your device will automatically start searching for the latest available update. If an available update is found, a warning will appear on the screen.
  4. Click the Download and install now button to download and install the update on your phone.
  5. Your phone will automatically start installing the update. This may take a few moments. Then the phone will restart automatically for the new changes to take effect.
