Review SVANTTO 2K 120Hz Portable Gaming Monitor

SVANTTO 16" 2K Portable Gaming Monitor, Portable Professional Monitor 120Hz 2ms E-Sports for PC Laptop with FreeSync, Plug and Play, Smart Case, Hands-Free, VESA Mount, Lightweight Travel Monitor

out of the box

The screen comes with an instruction manual. The 20W brick supports 5V, 9V and 12V and can be used for other devices. Includes two USB-C to USB-C cables and an HDMI to mini HDMI cable. The screen is wrapped in a protective bag that doubles as a stand. It's nice to see how the entire screen wraps around. The case should provide good protection. The case is attached to the screen with magnets, which makes it easy to remove and install.

screen:

The screen is 2560 x 1600 with an aspect ratio of 16:10. With 400 nits of brightness, FreeSync, and near-universal compatibility via USB-C, this monitor is built to please, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The On Screen Display (OSD) provides several configuration options. Pictures with all settings are attached. You should consider these to get the perfect setup for your scene. OSD is navigated using the buttons and toggles on the right side of the screen. In my experience it works very well. The screen's color calibration looks good out of the box, I haven't had time to calibrate it yet, but first impressions are good. User can use all color settings in OSD menu. I tested the shadow and blur effects with UFO Buster and was impressed with the results. There is very little ghosting and it certainly performs as advertised at 120Hz. I have purchased two of these monitors and they have no dead pixels and an acceptable amount of black light. The speakers are fine. They get really loud and don't sound terrible. There is good stereo separation.

macOS

The screen works fine on macOS, but that's the reason for deducting a star because the screen's user experience could be improved. The MacBook Pro M1 Max can power the screen without an external power supply, but the screen brightness is limited to "20". If you increase the brightness level too much, the screen will restart and reset to "20" brightness. The manual says the display should always be powered by an external power source, but it will work without it. macOS supports 60Hz, 120Hz, and 130Hz over USB-C, as well as HDR and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). VRR must first be activated in the display. Does not support HDMI VRR. MacOS screen resolution scaling is completely broken. macOS display settings are always set to non-default resolutions. Selecting Default View does not work correctly and the screen is enlarged with fonts that are too large for a 16-inch screen with a high pixel density. It can be configured correctly, but it does not happen by default. Find something that works for you because 2560 x 1600 (2k 16:10 resolution) doesn't scale well on macOS. I'm not sure if this is a macOS firmware or SVANTTO issue.

curling

The history of Windows is very similar to that of macOS. I can't screen test in USB-C on Windows because I don't have a Windows PC that supports display over USB-C. Using HDMI does not cause VRR and the display is not recognized as "G-Sync compatible". It's not an advertised feature so it wasn't an issue for me. Adjusting the screen to a comfortable resolution is easy, and the size is as expected.

High dynamic range

Do not buy this monitor for HDR. 400 nits of brightness isn't enough for a good HDR experience, but the screen supports it via HDMI and USB-C. If you're using HDR, make sure the HDR setting in the OSD is set to Auto, or the colors will completely fade out.

As a monitor, this is great. It looks crisp, the colors are great, and it checks my wearability. It has HDR, high refresh rate and variable refresh rate. I've played a few video games on it and everything is fine. I would definitely recommend this monitor to anyone. The only problem with this screen is the software/firmware. I'd like to see some usability improvements for macOS to properly handle zoom. I searched online for a new firmware but couldn't find a way to update the software on this screen. I hope this is a feature I can do in the future.
