Short video service (TikTok) has added a new feed of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) content to its app, with the assurance that videos will not appear in the feed until they are reviewed.
The STEM feed appears alongside our two existing feeds: (Next) and (For You), catering to users who are specifically searching for trending tech videos.
US users will start watching the feed later this month, TikTok said in a blog post.
According to TikTok, nothing posted under STEM content will appear on your STEM feed.
In order for a video to be eligible for streaming, the company said, it must pass an additional layer of vetting from partner organizations focused on trust and security efforts.
The company said Common Sense Networks will review the content to ensure it is suitable for broadcast, while Poynter Media evaluates the reliability of the information provided. Note that the company previously worked with Common Sense Networks to filter age-appropriate content.
The addition of a rich feed for specific topics aims to provide the TikTok community with a more visible and permanent place for users interested in STEM content to browse.
While TikTok says its STEM stream will be the place to access trusted entertainment, science and health have long been hot topics for misinformation, especially since the pandemic began.
The company prohibits false or misleading content about coronavirus and vaccines as part of its medical misinformation policy.
It's worth noting that the STEM feed isn't the only topic-specific feed TikTok is working on adding to the homepage, as it secretly added a new one in February, most recently titled: (Games). (sport) and (sport). Fashion and food (food). By switching between these feeds, you can view personalized content based on each category without searching.
It is believed that TikTok is trying to make it easier for users to find certain content through these personalized feeds, since both (me) and (your) feeds show random content.
