Google has announced a number of improvements to its Chrome browser that will help reduce battery drain on computers (MacBooks) when using the browser. The company says it's improving memory usage and the way the browser handles JavaScript code.
Google hasn't released numbers on how long the devices (MacBooks) will last while browsing the web before needing a charge, but according to tests by The Verge, it was possible to keep Chrome running until 5 p.m. while surfing the web and watching YouTube videos until 5 p.m. evening. 18 hours straight on a MacBook Pro 13 M2.
According to Google, these improvements are not limited to the latest models (MacBooks), owners of older computers (Macintosh) can benefit from them as well. The company has also confirmed that similar improvements to Chrome on Windows, Linux, and Android will be made in an upcoming version of the browser.
The company reduced the power consumption of the browser by making some changes to the way it removes old information from memory and stores new information, which reduces power consumption. It also changes how certain tasks run in the background in a way that doesn't consume much power.
Last week, Google introduced Save Memory and Power in Chrome. The first function is to free up the memory of currently unused tabs in order to have a better experience while actively browsing websites. Regarding the Power Saving mode, the company says Energy Saver saves power by reducing background activities and visual effects when the battery is empty, there are no chargers nearby, and the battery level drops to 20%. Websites with animations and videos have been launched.
Chrome users can get the latest browser updates from the official website.
