Duolingo launches AI-powered language learning

Duolingo, the developer of the popular language learning app, has announced Duolingo Max, a new subscription tier that offers an AI-powered learning experience.

The company has partnered with OpenAI, developer of the ChatGPT application, to create Duolingo Max as the new service takes advantage of the GPT-4 artificial intelligence announced today to deliver what the company calls highly customized languages.

Duolingo Max introduces two new features, Explain My Answer and Role Play. The (Explain My Answer) feature allows users to get detailed explanations of their training answers, while (Role Playing) provides an interactive way to practice conversational skills with the virtual characters in the application.

These new features are now available in Spanish and French for native language courses on iOS. Duolingo plans to offer more courses on other platforms in the coming period.

The company said it developed the new experience based on collaboration between course experts and application designers to use artificial intelligence to create content while ensuring its accuracy and effectiveness.

The company has expressed confidence in GPT-4 technology, noting that it is the most accurate and fastest version of the AI model available, and said it will continue to work with OpenAI to improve the technology and fix bugs to reduce it. The company understands that AI can sometimes make mistakes, so the app gives the app the ability for users to report errors or inaccuracies in AI responses, which will help improve model accuracy over time.

OpenAI released its new GPT 4 AI model earlier today, which it claims is smarter, more accurate, and less error-prone than the GPT 3.5 model that created ChatGPT.

The company describes GPT-4 as "multi-paradigm". Unlike previous generations that only supported text input, GPT-4 supports image input in addition to text thanks to its ability to understand, parse, and summarize information contained in images.

According to the company, after a series of professional and academic tests, GPT-4 has achieved performance similar to that of a human. The new model passed the mock practice test, ranking in the top 10% of graduates, while GPT-3.5 ranked in the bottom 10% in the same test.

Anthropic, which was founded by former OpenAI employees, also today announced the launch of its Claude AI model as a competitor to the GPT model, saying that many applications have already started using its new model in beta.

Similar to Duolingo, expect more companies to support AI features in their apps in the future.
