| TikTok announces a new warning and ban system for those who violate its policies |
Today, Thursday, TikTok announced several changes to its short-form video sharing service, including: New measures to ban accounts that repeatedly abuse the platform.
“TikTok is an entertainment platform built on creativity, self-expression, and originality where creators create original content,” the company said on its blog.
TikTok added, "Its Community Guidelines outline and explain what behavior and content are not allowed on our platform, and when users violate our Guidelines, we take action against their content and accounts so we can protect them from our platform."
TikTok today announced an update to its account enforcement system to ban users who repeatedly violate the policies. "We believe these changes will help us remove malicious accounts faster and more efficiently," the company said.
One limitation imposed on accounts by the platform's current enforcement system: a temporary ban on posting or commenting. But creators have complained to the platform that the system is confusing, disproportionately affecting accounts that rarely violate platform policies, and may, as TikTok says, be less. Effective in deterring those who frequently violate it.
To address this issue, under the new system, anyone who posts content that violates TikTok's Community Guidelines will be notified and the content removed. If the account reaches the maximum number of warnings for a feature (such as commenting and live broadcasting) or a policy (such as bullying), the account will be permanently suspended.
The company indicated that the maximum warning limits depend on how harmful the hack is to users of the platform. For example, violating a policy that encourages hate speech may be subject to stricter restrictions than less harmful disruptive participation.
“We will continue to issue permanent bans after the first warning for severe violations, including: promoting or threatening violence, displaying or promoting child sexual abuse material, or real-world demonstrations of violence or torture,” TikTok said.
As an added precaution, the company will permanently ban accounts that have too many cumulative strikes across policies and features. Account history alerts expire after 90 days.
To help creators understand the new changes and comply with our Community Guidelines, TikTok intends to roll out the new features I described in the App Safety section in the coming weeks.
New features include: an Account Status page that allows creators to view account ratings more easily, and a Report History page that allows creators to see reports they have created on other accounts and their content.
To "improve" content-level "transparency," the company said it plans to test a new feature in select countries that will provide creators with information about videos that don't qualify for "For You" recommendations, tell them why and send them a petition. .
According to TikTok, the updated account enforcement system will now be rolled out worldwide and users will be notified when the system becomes available.
