First impression:
- A fairly compact device at 9.7 x 3.6 x 4.1 inches with a nice silver dial on top.
Since it contains two AA batteries, you can start using it right away.
- Reversible with a knife to open the bag on one side and seal on the other. With magnets on the bottom, you can stick it to the fridge or hang it anywhere with the loop on the end.
- The power switch acts as a guarantee, when it is off, the heating pad will not fall off.
First use:
To apply the sealant, the instructions say to place the bag between the sealant pads, press the sealant for a few seconds to allow it to warm up, and then slowly push it through the bag to seal.
I tested it on an old silver lined jerky bag and was amazed at how easy and quick it was to seal it.
Double weld approximately 2mm wide unfortunately it's not straight but that's my responsibility as you'll need a steady hand or guiding to keep it looking good. With a little practice it gets easier and easier.
I tried putting water in the bag to see if the seal was tight. At the beginning of the seal, it leaked on my first attempt. Maybe I didn't give it enough time to warm up before shutting it down or I was too fast at first, but my second attempt was completely successful. The seal is completely waterproof and will not come apart under pressure or attempt to tear the seal.
The quality of the seal also depends on the material. I tried the soft plastic bubble wrap that came in the box and it sealed well, but I over melted the plastic and sealed it while cutting off the excess. It will leave a little bit of melted plastic residue on the heating element, so be careful with very thin/soft plastic since it has a lower melting point. Again, there is no stamping at the beginning, so there is room. A reverse pass may be required to close it completely so you can check before you finish.
I put a meat thermometer and also used an infrared heat gun and it never got above 40C. Heats up during use and cools down quickly once you stop pressing the sealer.
The end of the knife has a sharp protruding point. As with the closing tip, the bag must be inserted into the cutter end and hole of the bag before it is pushed through the hole. I tried sliding the bag over the blade like a letter opener and it didn't cut, but once punctured it cut perfectly. So that can also require a second swipe to activate the bag.
