Google Translate is one of the most used services on the internet. It supports dozens of languages, more than most other translation services, and it works accurately. Although Google Translate is widely used, most people only use it to translate written text. But it does more than that as you can use it to quickly translate audio files or live speech from one language to another.
If you haven't tried this feature before, do the following:
1- Translate the audio file on your phone using the Google Translate app:
To start translating audio files using the Google Translate app on your phone, go to the Google Play Store to download a special version for Android users, or to the App Store if you're an iPhone user. You can then use the app to translate the audio files by following these steps:
- Launch the Google Translate app.
- At the bottom of the screen you will find two languages, one on the left and one on the right.
- If your target language is not the default, click on the language on the left and select the language you want to translate. Then click the language on the right and select the language you want to translate to.
- Click the microphone button at the bottom of the screen.
- Use another phone or any media player to play the audio file or speak after the start-up ring.
- When you finish speaking or playing the audio file, a screen will appear showing the audio file or recording transcript in both languages.
- Click the small speaker icon above the translated text to hear the audio file in the new language
Translate long audio clips without interruption:
While following the previous steps will help you translate a short snippet of your audio dialogue, the app will interrupt you again and again to provide an interpretation of your speech or audio file when it detects that the audio input has been cut off. Therefore, any short pause can lead to interruptions that are inconsistent with the interpretation of long speeches or recorded speeches. And to solve this problem. Follow these steps:
- If you want to translate a long speech or a pre-recorded audio conversation, after tapping the microphone button at the bottom of the screen in the Google Translate app, tap the transcription button that appears just above it.
- This will enable transcription mode in Google Translate. In this case, it is possible to pause for a long time without interrupting the translation. You can also save the translated text for future reference by clicking on the star icon that appears in the upper right corner of the translated text screen to save it.
2- Use Google Translate to translate conversations in real time:
When you're talking to someone who doesn't speak the same language and you want to understand what they're saying, you can use the Google Translate app to translate the conversation in real time. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the main translation screen of the Google Translate app, select the source language and the translation language. Let's say you choose Spanish as the source language and English as the translation language.
- Click on the chat button that appears in the lower left corner of the application screen.
- To translate the voice from Spanish to English, press the Spanish button at the bottom of the screen and speak. After you finish speaking, you will see an English translation of what you said.
- To translate the conversation from English to Spanish, press the English button at the bottom of the screen and start speaking. When talking to someone, you can take turns speaking in the language each user speaks.
3- Translate audio files on your computer using Google Translate:
Whether you're using a Mac, Windows, Linux, or Chromebook, you can use Google Translate to translate any audio file from your desktop browser. To do this, follow these steps:
- Go to translate.google.com in your computer's desktop browser.
- Once the page loads, you will find two fields, one for the source language you want to translate on the left and one for the translated text on the right.
- From the languages in the box on the left, select a language that matches the language of your audio file.
- In the box on the right, select the language to which you want to translate the audio file.
- Click the microphone button that appears in the lower left corner of the box on the right.
- Play the audio file you want to translate on your phone or another media player.
