There are no security updates for Windows 7 after tomorrow

Tomorrow, Tuesday, is an additional deadline for Microsoft to send security updates to fix critical and critical vulnerabilities in Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows 7 Professional.

The US tech giant previously released Windows 7 in October 2009, ended full support in January 2015, and then ended extended support in January 2020, but the company extended the security update review deadline by three months annually to May 10. 2023

The Extended Security Update Program was the last option for customers still using Windows 7 devices after the end of support in recent years.

It was also reported that all versions of Windows 8.1 released nine years ago in November 2013 will also end support for Extended Security tomorrow.

"Most Windows 7 devices do not meet the Windows 11 upgrade requirements, but compatible Windows 7 PCs can be upgraded to Windows 10 by purchasing and installing the full software," Microsoft explained on their blog. She added, "Before you invest in upgrading to Windows 10, remember that Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025."

Microsoft recommends that customers whose devices do not meet the technical requirements for new versions of Windows replace them with devices that support Windows 11 to take advantage of the latest hardware features.

According to Statcounter GlobalStats, more than 11% of Windows devices worldwide are still running Windows 7, while 2.59% of users are still running Windows 8.1.

Microsoft will release Edge 109 next week as the latest version of the web browser to support Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1.

This version of the web browser will be the last version that supports server systems: Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2.

Google made a similar announcement last October, saying that Chrome 110, which is scheduled for release in February next year, will be the last to support Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1.

Edge 109 and Chrome 110 will continue to run on the old OS, but they won't receive security updates or bug fixes, exposing users to security risks.

In addition, according to Statcounter GlobalStats, Google Chrome now has more than 64% of the web browser market, followed by Apple's Safari at 18%, while Edge uses a rendering engine from Blink. Google compares to Microsoft, whose share does not exceed 4%.
