The global PC market ended 2022 on a sharp decline, with combined shipments of desktop and laptop computers declining 29% to 65.4 million units in the fourth quarter from last year.
This is the fourth consecutive quarter of declines as holiday spending declined on the back of the deteriorating economic environment. This drop leads to an estimate for total shipments for 2022 of 285.1 million units, down 16% from the 2021 peak when all end-user segments experienced peak demand.
However, shipments remain cheap compared to pre-pandemic levels, particularly with total shipments up 7% in 2022 compared to 2019.
Laptops will see a sharper decline than desktops, with shipments down 30% to 51.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022 and down 19% to 223.8 million units for the full year. Desktops fell 24% to 14.1 million units in the fourth quarter and 7% to 61.3 million units in the full year 2022.
“As expected, the global PC market faced additional headwinds in the fourth quarter to cap off a challenging 2022,” said Ishan Dutt, principal analyst at Canalys. "Even with this near-term difficulty, the long-term outlook for PC hardware remains positive," Dutt added.
Lenovo ranked first in the PC market with total shipments of approximately 15.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022, down 29% year-on-year.
HP ranked second as its PC shipments fell 29% in the fourth quarter, to about 13.2 million units. For the full year of 2022, the company's US shipments fell 25%, to 55.2 million units.
In third place, Dell's shipments in the fourth quarter fell 37% to 19.8 million units, the largest drop among major manufacturers. However, total shipments for the year are down 16% from where the year began, to 49.7 million units.
Apple ranked fourth in all figures for the fourth quarter and 2022 with 27.2 million Mac units shipped at the end of the year, down 6%, while Taiwan-based Asus ranked fifth with deliveries in 2021 declining 4%. .
