| Samsung announces a 200MP image sensor |
Samsung today announced its latest image sensor (ISOCELL HP2) with a resolution of up to 200MP, supporting “optimized pixel technology and the full capacity to capture stunning images in leading smartphones.”
The South Korean tech giant said in a statement that its new ISOCELL HP2 image sensor has 200 million pixels, each 0.6 microns by 1/1.3 inch, the same area as the 108MP sensor widely used in smartphones. The camera is currently in the lead. By providing more pixels in the same space, consumers can enjoy higher resolution without increasing the phone's camera effect.
Samsung explained that thanks to its advanced pixel binning technology (Tetra2pixel), the sensor adds more versatility to the camera by simulating different pixel sizes for different lighting conditions. In low-light environments, the sensor switches to a 50MP 1.2µm sensor or a 12.5MP 2.4µm sensor by connecting 4 to 16 consecutive pixels.
For 8K video, the ISOCELL HP2 sensor switches to 50MP 1.2µm mode to reduce cropping and capture more of the scene. According to Samsung, shooting in 8K at 30fps results in clear, cinema-quality video.
Thanks to Samsung's new D-VTG (Double Vertical Transmission Gate) technology, the new sensor can significantly reduce blurry images captured in bright environments, Samsung says.
In low light conditions, the ISOCELL HP2 sensor provides faster and more accurate autofocus thanks to Super QPD technology, which allows the sensor to use 200 megapixels for focusing.
For the best HDR performance, Samsung first announced DSG support in 50MP mode. In addition, the (Smart-ISO Pro) technology combines different ISO values for a single exposure, allowing the camera to capture 12.5-megapixel photos and 4K video at 60 frames per second (HDR).
Samsung says that the sensor (ISOCELL HP2) has entered mass production and we expect to see it in the company's upcoming Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is expected to be announced at a Samsung event in February. 1.
