Nokia and Samsung sign a 5G patent licensing agreement |
Finnish telecoms equipment maker Nokia announced today (Monday) that it has signed a new 5G patent licensing agreement with Samsung after a previous deal expired last December.
In a statement, Nokia said that starting January 1, 2023, Samsung will pay Nokia for a number of years under an agreement covering Nokia's core inventions in 5G and other technologies. He added that the terms of the agreement between the two parties will remain confidential.
The company claims that its patent portfolio, built on more than €130 billion in research and development investments since 2000, consists of nearly 20,000 patent families, including: More than 4,500 announced core patent families for 5G .
Nokia says it “contributes its inventions to open standards in exchange for the right to license them on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms. Companies can license and benefit from these technologies without having to invest heavily in the standards themselves, which stimulates innovation in new products and services for consumers.”
Notably, Nokia's rival Ericsson reached an agreement with Samsung over 5G patents last year, ending a dispute that hurt quarterly earnings.
