IDC: Smartphone sales are really bad even during the holiday season

According to a recent report by market research firm IDC, global smartphone shipments will drop 18.3% year-on-year to 300.3 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022.

According to the report, the decline marked the worst shipment decline in a single quarter and led to an 11.3% decline in cellphone shipments in 2022.

The company (IDC) said in its report that the year 2022 will end with shipments of about 1.21 billion smartphones, which is the highest annual total since 2013 due to the sharp decline in consumer demand, inflation and the minimum value of shipments. Not sure.

"Never before have we seen a quarter of holiday shipments lower than the previous quarter," said Nabila Popal, research director of the IDC Worldwide Tracker for Delivery team.

Popal added, "Significant sales and promotions during the quarter contributed to depletion of existing inventories rather than growth in shipments. Suppliers are increasingly concerned about deliveries and schedules as they refocus on profitability. They are more cautious."

According to Bhopal, Apple appears to be the most resilient company so far, but its main factories in China closed unexpectedly and its supply chain was sluggish.

According to Bhopal, the holiday season tells us that high inflation and growing fears will continue to constrain consumer spending more than expected, pushing any potential improvement into the worst of 2023.

(IDC) data for the fourth quarter of 2022 shows that the American company Apple ranks first with shipments of 72.3 million units, followed by its Korean competitor Samsung with shipments of 58.2 million units, by the Chinese company: Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo with total shipments of 33.2 million units and 25.3 million units and 22.9 million units, respectively.

For the year 2022, Samsung ranked first with 260.9 million units shipped, followed by Apple with 226.4 million units, Xiaomi with 153.1 million units, OPPO with 103.3 million units, and Vivo with 99 million units.

According to IDC, the data in this report is preliminary and subject to change in the final report.
