External Twitter applications suffer from an outage and the reason is unknown |
For some external services that allow users to access the Twitter platform, such as (Tweetbot), (Twitterific), and (Echofon), there have been failures, the reasons for which are not clear.
Tweetbot confirmed the issue in a tweet on Twitter Friday morning, saying, "Tweetbot and other customers are having trouble logging in to Twitter. We've contacted Twitter for details but haven't heard back yet. It's just a temporary issue and we'll let you know once details are available," he said.
The (Twitterific) service also said in a tweet on Twitter: “We are aware that there is a problem with (Twitterific) communication with Twitter. We don't know the real cause yet, but we're working to find out. Stay tuned. Listen and accept our apologies."
In an email response to TechCrunch, Tweetbot's Paul Haddad said the problems started around 6:30 a.m. ET today, Friday. He also mentioned that not all API requests from the app work.
The company may have made changes to the APIs of its third-party customers, causing these applications to crash. It is not clear if this will prevent these services from accessing the platform.
In addition to the apps mentioned above, users of some other services such as (Fenix), (Twitpane), (Feather) and (Talon) also complained that they could not access the platform. So, for most users, the only way to access Twitter at the moment seems to be through the main app or website.
The developer portal reveals that the apps are "paused" according to a post on the Twitter developer forum.
Even before Elon Musk's takeover of the company in late October, user and tech sites were speculating that Twitter was planning to shut down external services altogether.
Third-party apps rely on Twitter's API to pull data from the service, which has been discussed in the past when the company ignored third-party developer tools.
