Twitter prohibits its users from promoting the competing social platform

Twitter announced Sunday that it will delete accounts created specifically to promote other social platforms, as well as content that contains links or usernames on those platforms.

A Twitter support account posted a tweet saying that the move will affect content on social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta Corporation, and Mastadon, a platform used as an alternative to Twitter, is being announced.

The list also includes former US President Donald Trump's Truth, Tribel, Nostr and Post network. But the account also said it would allow cross-platform content.

Twitter explained in its tweet: “We know that many of our users are active on other social media platforms. However, we will no longer allow the promotion of certain social media platforms for free on Twitter.”

In a post outlining the changes, Twitter said it would take action "at the tweet and account level" against users who violate the policy.

This means that users can no longer link their Twitter profiles to their profiles on other social networks or send Tweets that redirect users to their Instagram or Facebook accounts. The policy not only includes links from other platforms, but also extends to posting usernames from competing platforms.

Additionally, users can no longer tweet tweets containing posts from the blocked platform unless the post is shared, meaning the same post must be shared on competing sites and on Twitter.

Twitter can ban accounts that are "primarily used to promote content on another social platform" and users are no longer allowed to post links to link aggregation services such as Linktree or Lnk.bio.

Twitter said it will remove any tweets that contain policy violations and users who include links to banned social media platforms on their profiles can be banned.

The company will also take action against users who attempt to circumvent this policy by blocking URLs from other platforms, misspelling addresses, or sharing login screenshots on blocked platforms.

In particular, other platforms such as: Telegram, Tik Tok, YouTube and Weibo are still not banned on Twitter and the motive for blocking links to the aforementioned networks is not clear.
