Report: Amazon plans to launch standalone sports content app

According to The Information, Amazon is developing a standalone app for watching sports content, citing people familiar with the matter.

As viewers in the United States and much of the world increasingly migrate from traditional pay TV to on-demand streaming services, sporting events remain one of the biggest draws for live viewers.

If Amazon goes ahead with this move, it should complement Amazon's efforts to double the sports programming it offers to subscribers of its Prime Video content delivery service, which is one way for the company to attract consumers to its shopping platform.

Amazon already owns the streaming rights to a few games including: the American football franchise known as Thursday Night Football and the English Premier League, giving it a better chance with the sports broadcasting pioneer to compete with Walt Disney.

Last week, YouTube also signed a multi-year deal to stream NFL Sunday Ticket game packages exclusively in the US.

According to the report, it is not known when Amazon will launch the sports app and whether it will proceed with the plan.

It should be noted that the company is currently reviewing unprofitable businesses and has laid off some employees in response to rising costs and lower demand, as well as consumers and businesses who have been concerned about inflation recently.
