Poll: Developers are now using Linux more than Mac OS


A new study shows that software based on the open source Linux operating system is becoming more popular with developers than Apple's Mac OS.

These findings were revealed in the Stack Overflow 2022 Developer Survey by Stack Overflow, a Q&A site for professional programmers and tech enthusiasts.

"As of May 2022, more than 70,000 developers have shared with us how they learned and happened, what tools they used, and what they wanted," the survey stated.

According to the survey, 87% of developers have college degrees, and the proportion of developers who learn programming online will increase from 60% last year to 70% in 2022. Learning platforms include but are not limited to: Udemy, then Coursera, then Codeacademy.

The survey also examines developer experience, roles, use cases, demographics, and popular technologies such as programming languages, databases, cloud platforms, and web technologies.

When it comes to operating systems, developers describe Linux distributions as the most customizable and adaptable, accounting for about 40% of home and business use. This percentage has increased from 25% over the past five years, indicating that the significant shift to open source operating systems could continue into 2023.

Apple Mac OS also accounts for a high 32% for home and business use. However, Windows has the largest share, dominating the global operating system market with 62% for private use and 49% for professional use.

2022 is also the year of growing popularity for Windows 11, with monthly numbers for Statcounter showing a steady increase in market share, from less than 3% in January 2022 to 16% in November 2022. Windows 10 remains the most popular operating system And accounting for 70% of what constitutes versions of operating systems.

In addition, data from Statcounter indicates that Windows accounts for about 75% of all desktop computer users worldwide, including developers. Mac OS accounts for about 15.6%, while Linux accounts for less than 3%.
