Musk undoes and reinstates suspended Twitter accounts that investigated his location |
Elon Musk said on Saturday that he would reopen investigations into suspended Twitter accounts on his site, including journalists arrested for allegedly violating Twitter's rules on posting personal information.
On Wednesday, Twitter suspended the account of @elonjet, an account that tracks Musk's private jet in real time using publicly available data.
After some high-profile journalists criticized Twitter's decision and supported @elonjet, Musk said, "The same rules of investigation apply to journalists as they apply to everyone else."
"I totally accept being criticized all day long, but I don't accept real-time investigations or putting my family in danger," Musk added on Thursday.
But the process of banning journalists' accounts has not gone smoothly, which has angered government officials and news outlets in European countries, with some officials saying the platform threatens freedom of the press.
After the unexpected backlash, Musk seemed to be at a dead end, so he wanted to drop a poll asking his followers, who currently number around 121.8 million, for their thoughts on reactivating the suspended account.
In his investigation Friday, Musk asked about the resumption of suspended accounts that monitored his whereabouts in real time: now or within seven days. Roughly 58.7% of respondents (about 3.7 million users) voted for instant account recovery, compared to 41.3% who chose other options.
Although Musk has confirmed that he will not be taking requests for his location, he told supporters today that he has heeded voter requests. “People have spoken. Accounts investigating my situation will now be banned,” he said in a tweet.
