Musk is an appointment to consider the brain experiment on humans |
Elon Musk said he is "confident" that the brain chip developed by his neurotechnology company Neuralink will be ready for human trials within six months.
The company held an event at Neuralink's California headquarters on Wednesday, and while the company had scheduled it for October 31, Musk pushed it back without giving a reason.
Shortly after the event, the billionaire, who also runs Twitter, electric car maker Tesla and aerospace company SpaceX, tweeted, "We now believe the Neuralink device is ready for human use, so timing is now pending regulatory approval." FDA Food and Drug Administration.
About the size of a coin, Neuralink's brain chip contains tiny wires embedded with electrodes to monitor and electrically stimulate brain activity. Neuralink aims to embed chips into human skulls using a robot the company is also developing.
At Wednesday's event, Musk demonstrated his brain computer technology by showing a video of a monkey apparently fitted with a Neuralink brain chip. According to the company, the monkey was "telepathically typing on a computer."
Musk has expressed great ambitions to apply the technology to humans. Initially, the company hoped that brain-computer interface technology would provide paralyzed people with a way to communicate through thought.
In the future, Musk says, the company wants to develop technologies that can, for example, enable people with severe spinal cord injuries to fully regain control of their bodies.
Musk has set and missed several deadlines for putting Neuralink brain chips into humans. In 2019, he said the company hopes to be able to implant brain chips in patients by the end of 2020. In 2020, Musk said human trials of the technology could begin within a year, and he said he repeated the same statement earlier this year. general.
