Google announces changes to the Chrome browser release cycle |
Google announced on Wednesday that it will change the release cycle for its Chrome web browser starting early next year.
The US tech giant said in its blog that the new preview update will be available from February 2023 to a small group of users via the stable channel.
Google has stated that the expected stable release will be available a week prior to the expected release date of the final stable release to allow Google to fix any reported issues before the update is released to the public.
Google said: “Releasing the stable build early to a small group of users gives us the opportunity to monitor the build before we release it to all users. If a problem is detected in the browser, it can be fixed with relatively little impact.”
It should be noted that the current Chrome browser release cycle is to first provide updates for the Canary channel, which is the beta version of the browser used to test unstable code, then the developer version, then the beta version and finally the stable alley.
For the new release cycle, new early stable releases will appear between the beta and the final stable release to fix any issues that may not have been discovered during the testing period.
Google said that version 110 of the Chrome browser will be the first version of the browser to follow the new release cycle. Expect a stable release in January/February, the original stable release date. The final stable version of Chrome 110 will be released on February 7, 2023.
