Ericsson: The fifth generation network will reach a milestone

5G networks will hit a milestone by the end of 2022, according to a new report from Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson.

The company said in its report that the number of 5G subscriptions will reach one billion by the end of this year.

Although this figure is still far below the number of 4G subscribers, which will reach around 5 billion in 2022, Ericsson expects the number of 4G subscribers to peak by the end of the year as subscriptions instead of 5G pass on. the fourth. -generation. , as happened previously between third and fourth generation networks.

In North America, where carriers have been heavily promoting 5G networks for three years, nearly 35% of mobile phone subscriptions will be 5G by the end of 2022.

While medium-sized 5G networks, which offer faster speeds than 4G networks, now cover about 80% of the US population, according to Ericsson, carriers are charging more to access these high-speed networks.

Ericsson's higher prices for 5G services are primarily aimed at Western European countries, where mobile phone tariffs are often categorized by speed. But it's not an isolated practice, as the company says about 25% of carriers offering 5G services worldwide charge higher fees for 5G speeds than 4G speeds, with an average premium of 40%.

Ericsson believes that the trend of getting customers to upgrade to 5G quickly will continue.

“This pricing strategy is gaining momentum and is now being used by 24% of 5G product providers to segment the market and encourage consumers to switch to more expensive products,” the company said.
