After a 5-year delay Tesla has begun delivering its electric trailer |
Electric car maker Tesla held an event on Thursday to announce the start of deliveries of its electric semi-trailer trucks after a delay of nearly five years.
Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk (Elon Musk) introduced the prototype of the Series 8 electric semi-trailer truck in 2017. It was originally supposed to go into production in December 2019 but failed for various reasons.
In its financial results report for the second quarter of 2021, Tesla said it had to delay production until 2022 due to supply chain issues and limited battery supplies.
And in early October of last year, Musk tweeted that truck production had started and that the company would start delivering to customers in December 2022, which actually happened, but the company did not disclose the price of the electric truck at Thursday's event. , which will be PepsiCo's first customer, along with other companies such as UPS Shipping Company.
Tesla semi specification
Tesla had said in 2017 that its trailers would support the Autopilot driver assistance system, but yesterday there was no talk of that, nor of the self-driving feature for trucks.
Even fully loaded, the semi-trailer can travel 800 kilometers at a speed of 105 kilometers per hour on a single charge.
Previously, Tesla said that it would only take 20 seconds for the truck to accelerate from 0 to 95 kilometers on a full charge, and the company confirmed this statement on its official website.
The truck uses the same powertrain as the Model S and Model X, based on a three-engine system. According to the company, one of the motors runs continuously for maximum efficiency, while the other two are dedicated to torque and acceleration, which is useful when a driver is climbing a loading dock or trying to overtake another vehicle.
The truck can tow a trailer load of 3.72 tons, according to Tesla, and although its single-axle motor is only about the size of a football, it's three times more powerful than a diesel engine due to its energy density.
In the cockpit is the driver's seat in the middle, wide enough for the driver to get up and change, there are two monitors and many other devices.
As Tesla promised five years ago, its semi-charged electric truck will be powered by a megawatt charger that supports a next-generation immersion cooling system that will be similar to Tesla's Supercharge. . In addition to the chargers, the company will also install Megapacks energy storage systems, which are intended to save electricity when charging from the public grid.
The electric trailer battery can be charged to 70% if charged only for 30 minutes.
