| A report reveals the most popular programming languages in the world |
A new report shows that the C++ programming language has overtaken Java to become one of the three most popular languages among developers today.
The TIOBE Index, which scans more than 1 billion lines of code per day to keep up with developer trends, shows that Python is still the most popular programming language at 16.66%, ahead of C in the top 10%.
It should be noted that the ratio does not refer to market share, but to "the worldwide number of qualified engineers, training and third-party service providers". The top three programming languages give each a final tribute representing the language's growth, confidence, and even commitment to development.
While the TIOBE Index is released annually, the Java language, which ranked third in the December 2021 report, is now down 1.7% to take fourth place. Meanwhile, C++ saw a significant growth of 4.21%. However, the difference between them is almost negligible with their ratings being 11.94% and 11.82%, which indicates that they are still favored by developers all over the world.
This growth is significant for C++, as Paul Jansen, CEO of TIOBE Software, noted that this is the first time in the history of the TIOBE Index that C++ has outperformed Java.
C# is fifth with a usage rate of 4.92%, JavaScript is seventh, PHP is twelfth, and Apple's Swift language has risen from tenth to fifteenth.
What makes a successful programming language varies by field, and the TIOBE metric is just one metric. Earlier this year, CirlceCI's 2022 State of Software Delivery report found a variety of programming languages of choice, including TypeScript, JavaScript, and Ruby. Python ranks fourth, and C and C++ are not in the top ten.
In any case, the takeaway from TIOBE's latest data is that it's clear that the quartet of the most popular programming languages will likely continue to vie for first place unless another language rises in popularity.
