A Microsoft employee incorrectly announced that they had tested a key Notepad feature

A Microsoft employee has mistakenly announced that the popular Notepad will get tabs in the latest version of the Windows operating system.

The product manager of the American software giant posted a tweet with a picture of a tagged copy of Notepad and excitedly said, "Notepad in Windows 11 has flags!" With a megaphone emoji.

Then, a few minutes later, the tweet was deleted, but Windows Central, which specializes in news and Microsoft products, and a number of accounts saw the tweet and took screenshots of the new feature.

The Notepad screenshot has an internal Microsoft disclaimer that reads: "Confidential - do not discuss features or screenshots".

This warning indicates that the tabs feature is still in early internal testing at Microsoft, but may be available to Windows Insider Testing participants in early 2023.

If Microsoft continues to roll out tabs for Notepad, it will be the first program to get a tabbed interface after Windows File Explorer, which got the feature earlier this year.

It should be noted that four years ago Microsoft began testing tabs across all Windows 10 apps, a feature called Groups. This included tab support in Notepad and File Explorer, but Microsoft ultimately decided to abandon the project and not release it for Windows 10 users.

Adding tabs to Notepad may signal the arrival of tabs in more integrated Windows applications, especially since the feature is popular and required in many applications, especially web browsers.
