WhatsApp is testing a new feature for forwarding messages and group chats |
Instant messaging service WhatsApp has started rolling out a new feature that allows for annotated media transitions, along with another useful feature for group chats.
Reconvert with Captions allows users to convert images, videos, GIFs, and documents while preserving their subtitles or adding new subtitles. In addition, users can delete comments by clicking on the delete button that appears when re-converting.
WhatsApp already supported this feature in Google Android beta 2.22.23.15 and Apple iPhone iOS 22.23.0.72.
Specifically, the note conversion feature is now available for users of the WhatsApp 2.2245.5 Beta desktop mobile application and will be rolled out to more users in the coming days.
In addition to this feature, Meta-owned WhatsApp has begun rolling out another group-friendly feature on the desktop service, showing profile pictures in group chats to make it easier for group members to recognize each other.
Before WhatsApp started trialing the desktop version last October, group chats only showed users' names without their photos.
If a group member does not use a profile picture or hides it in their privacy settings, they will see a default profile icon the same color as the contact's name. This feature can help identify group members for whom we do not have phone numbers.
Notably, the feature is now available for users of beta version 2.2245.3 of the WhatsApp desktop app and will be rolled out to more users in the coming days.
Those who want to try out the new features can sign up for WhatsApp on the Android beta program, and can also manually download and install the latest beta version of the app from here. You can also sign up for the iOS beta program here.
