Twitter sets a time limit for getting the blue verification mark |
Twitter updated the page for its monthly subscription service, Twitter Blue, on Thursday to say it was time before new accounts signed up for the service.
The US social media giant rolled out a new version of its Twitter Blue service in early November, allowing any subscriber who pays $7.99 per month to earn the Blue Certificate badge, previously reserved for celebrities, influencers and politicians.
But shortly after the token was made available last week, a string of accounts posing as celebrities, brands, or politicians began. The service was only taken down by Twitter, but the company's new president, Elon Musk, later announced the relaunch on November 29.
In anticipation of that moment, Twitter's blue pages now state that new accounts can't be registered until 90 days after creation, which doesn't stop anyone from creating a new account and immediately getting a blue verification badge. This can reduce counterfeiting.
Although Twitter Blue did not say when the subscriptions would be available, earlier this month it imposed a condition on those who wish to sign up that the account must be created by November 9, 2022, which is the service's due date. Reduce fake verified accounts.
And while Twitter, led by Musk, continues to allow users to earn blue verification badges for monthly subscriptions, it's looking at all kinds of ways to prevent its abuse. Including Musk previously said that it will not be possible to change the name on a verified account, and until Twitter guarantees that the new name does not violate its terms of service, anyone who attempts to change the name will lose the verification tag.
Musk also said that anyone wishing to create a phishing account should clearly state it in their name.
And the new Twitter Blue service page notes that going forward, the company may, at its sole discretion, impose a waiting period without notice for new accounts that wish to earn a blue verification badge. In a way, this reverts the document policy to its previous state.
