Sony reveals the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers has decreased |
In its official announcement of its quarterly financial report, Sony announced that the number of PlayStation Plus users has decreased.
Sony announced today that the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers grew to 45.4 million in the quarter from 47.3 million.
This is the third consecutive drop in PlayStation Plus subscribers, although Sony updated the service before the restart between May and June and also bolstered the service with a variety of titles available for download or streaming.
In its report, Sony explained that despite the decline in subscriptions, the company saw an increase in revenue from its Internet services, including revenue from PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Network advertising revenue, and the now-defunct PlayStation Now.
Services revenue came to $794 million from $679 million annually, figures that also show that Sony's share of consumer spending on services is increasing as subscriber numbers decline.
The company also sold 3.3 million PlayStation 5s between July and the end of September, a percentage of the company's sales in the same quarter last year.
While Sony published 62.5 million copies of the game sold, Sony also revealed the supply chain challenges the company faced in completing shipments of the PlayStation 5 console.
Sony's gaming division revenue fell to $4.9 billion from $4.4 billion year-over-year, while operating income fell 50% to $285 million from $560 million.
Sony also cut its directive for the company's gaming division to $1.5 billion from $1.7 billion as it ramps up production for the company's PS5 and plans to release more games that will be compatible with PCs and smartphones.
