Musk reveals Twitter's new check mark colors |
Elon Musk said Twitter's Verified Flag may return on December 2 with a new way to verify someone's identity to help combat identity theft.
Musk called the new manual authentication process "painful but necessary." The certification mark will be expanded to three colors, which are corporate gold, government gray, and the well-known blue for personal accounts.
Now, Musk seems convinced that providing verification codes to everyone just to get $8 to boost Twitter's revenue, no matter the consequences, is doing the company more harm than good.
The monthly subscription service Twitter Blue, which launched in early November after Musk ignored warnings from Twitter employees, was soon exploited by many to impersonate well-known public figures and brands, resulting in a "high-stakes" platform that angered some advertisers.
Musk later decided to discontinue the service, stating that the company would not launch the service until "we are confident no significant imitations will occur."
Musk has previously said that Twitter can paint organizations a different color than individuals, and he's now revealing more details about the move.
“Anyone whose identity is verified will get the same blue tick,” Musk said in a tweet, adding, “Individuals can get a small, secondary tick that they belong to an organization if that organization is verified.”
The Twitter CEO said he'll get a more detailed explanation of how it all works next week.
