| Musk gives Twitter employees a choice between working long hours or being fired |
Twitter's new CEO and sole official, Elon Musk, has sent an email to all of the company's remaining employees, giving them the option to commit to extended hours or quit.
The warning came from Musk, who has been kicked out of Twitter since his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter after the company's top executives laid off half of the workforce and fired some contractors who were working with the company without permission.
In addition, in recent days, Musk has fired senior engineers after they publicly criticized him on Twitter or on Slack, the company's private messaging service with which employees communicate.
Since Musk took office on Oct. 28, he has announced major changes planned on Twitter. However, he was forced to backtrack on a change he said would roll out quickly and simplify Twitter Blue, the monthly subscription service.
The new version of Twitter Blue allows any subscriber who pays $7.99 per month to earn a pre-saved blue certification badge for celebrities and politicians, a badge that those who own it can show off.
But shortly after the brand went public last week, a slew of accounts posing as celebrities, brands, or politicians began pouring in. Sometimes they spread false information about influential companies.
For example, an account impersonating Eli Lilly, a multinational pharmaceutical company, caused serious trouble after tweeting, “We are happy to announce that insulin is now free.” The tweet lingered on the social media platform for several hours before being deleted. The real Lilly account later tweeted, We apologize to those who received misinformation from the fake Lilly account.
Eli Lilly shares fell sharply after the fake news and the company decided to suspend Twitter ads indefinitely.
At this point, Musk now plans to provide Twitter Blue again with a blue certifying mark starting November 29th.
