Learn about the specifications of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.. the leading phone processor for 2023
Today, Qualcomm revealed the specifications of the new generation of its flagship processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which will power most of the flagship smartphones that will be launched next year.
The US technology giant said in a statement that the new chips will provide better and more efficient performance of artificial intelligence-related tasks.
New chip improvements include: an updated AI-focused Hexagon processor, a smarter GPU, and a new modem for improved 5G performance. It also supports the seventh version of the wireless network: Wi-Fi 7.
Compared to the first generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the new Gen 2 chip's Kryo processor features a single-core Arm Cortex-X3 architecture clocked at 3.2GHz. There are also four performance cores clocked at 2.8GHz and three efficiency cores clocked at 2.0GHz. All this is 200-300 MHz faster than last year's chipset cores.
Compared to the previous generation, Qualcomm claims that the processor delivers 35% better performance and 40% better energy efficiency. Similarly, Adreno GPU is 25% faster and 45% more energy efficient. The new chips will be manufactured with 4nm technology, similar to the 1st generation.
The American company added that it had fixed the Hexagon processor, making it 4.35 times faster in terms of artificial intelligence performance. According to the company, the processor is now capable of handling more complex tasks, such as translating from one language into several others in real time.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the first SoC to support Wi-Fi 7 networks thanks to the Snapdragon X70 modem that was announced at MWC earlier this year. And by using artificial intelligence processors, modems can improve the coverage and speed of 5G networks.
The Snapdragon X70 modem supports two active 5G SIM cards, which means the ability to use two different 5G networks at the same time.
In terms of sound, the chip supports dynamic surround sound, i. h. When using compatible headphones, the sound moves around the user's head. For gaming prowess, the chip supports real-time ray tracing technology for more realistic reflections and lighting.
With the Spectra Image Signal Processor, which the company now calls Cognitive ISP, the chip can perform better image and video processing with real-time semantic segmentation. This helps the imaging system to recognize different types of objects in the image and make appropriate adjustments to the image.
In theory, the camera's functionality would help distinguish between objects like faces, hair, and the sky, and make color adjustments to each object when taking a photo.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip is also said to support new image sensors from Sony and Samsung, the two companies that make sensors for almost all smartphones.
The chip also supports 8K video recording and playback, but on the device itself and externally when the device is connected to an external monitor, the limit is 4K.
According to Qualcomm, the list of companies that will use the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip in its phones includes Motorola, Oppo, and Asus. The company added that the chip will appear in smartphones by the end of 2022.
