Jaguar Land Rover Wolfspeed Partnership to Improve Electric Vehicle Efficiency |
Jaguar Land Rover and Wolfspeed have announced a strategic partnership to supply the next generation of electric vehicles with silicon carbide semiconductors to improve fuel efficiency and increase range.
As part of the company's reinvention strategy, Jaguar Land Rover aims to convert its business to electrification and achieve net zero emissions in the supply chain, manufacturing, services and operations by 2039.
Wolfspeed's latest technology, made from silicon carbide used specifically in motor starters, is used to control the transfer of power from the battery to the motor.
The first Range Rovers to feature this advanced technology will be launched in 2024, followed by a brand-new all-electric Jaguar the following year.
The partnership builds on the relationship between Wolfspeed and the Jaguar TCS racing team, which competes in the ABB Formula E Championship, which uses advanced silicon carbide technology to improve efficiency, track efficiency and performance.
The agreement is the latest in Jaguar Land Rover's plans and programs to develop and develop strategic partnerships with industry leaders to create future cars that embody modern luxury. In February 2022, Jaguar Land Rover announced that from 2025 NVIDIA would focus on providing software-specific solutions and advanced autonomous driving systems for next-generation vehicles.
“We have had an excellent partnership with Team Jaguar TCS Racing for the past five seasons,” said Thierry Bollore, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover. “As part of our strategy to reinvent, this collaboration, which has evolved into a strategic partnership, allows us to integrate Wolfspeed’s advanced silicon carbide technology into Our electric vehicles are next-generation, providing our customers with a wide range of capabilities.”
Greg Low, CEO of Wolfsspeed, said: “Wolfsspeed is proud to partner with Jaguar Land Rover, which supports Jaguar Land Rover's bold and steadfast commitment to bring its iconic brand to life by harnessing the strength, efficiency and combination of silicon carbide technology. With the global shift towards an all-electric future, the benefits of silicon carbide, particularly fuel efficiency, will play a key role in Jaguar Land Rover's pursuit of zero CO2 emissions. »
Under the terms of the partnership agreement, Jaguar Land Rover will participate in Wolfsspeed's Supply Assurance Program to ensure the technology is delivered to meet future electric vehicle production needs. This will make the Jaguar Land Rover's future supply chain more straightforward and manageable.
Led by Barbara Bergmer, Executive Director of Industrial Operations, he is also a key driver in introducing a new value chain approach to company operations and supply chains.
State-of-the-art Wolfspeed technology delivers from 400 to 800 volts of power to electric drive systems throughout the electric chain. The silicon carbide solutions powering these devices are manufactured at Wolfsspeed's Mohawk Fab Valley facility in Marcy, New York, which opened in April 2022 and is the largest 200mm silicon carbide manufacturing facility in the world.
The fully automated facility will greatly expand the capabilities of silicon carbide technology to meet the growing global demand for electric vehicles and other high-tech industries.
